What Are The Signs of Tongue-Tie?

1.png

Infants & Babies

Infants with tongue tie may struggle with breastfeeding, displaying symptoms such as poor latch, difficulty sucking, prolonged feeding times, and irritability during feeding. They might also have trouble gaining weight and exhibit colic-like behavior due to swallowing air. Visibly, the tongue may appear heart-shaped or have limited mobility, making it hard for the baby to lift or stick out their tongue.

Children & Teens

Children and teens with tongue tie might face challenges with speech, including difficulty pronouncing certain sounds like "r," "l," "th," and "s." They may also experience dental issues, such as a gap between the lower front teeth or misalignment. Eating can be problematic, leading to picky eating habits, slow chewing, and swallowing difficulties. Additionally, these individuals might struggle with oral hygiene due to restricted tongue movement.

Adults

Adults with untreated tongue tie often experience chronic issues such as speech difficulties, including unclear articulation or a lisp. They may have ongoing dental problems, such as gum recession or tooth decay, due to the tongue's limited ability to clean the teeth properly. Eating and swallowing can remain troublesome, causing discomfort or choking. Some adults also report neck and jaw pain, headaches, and sleep apnea related to restricted tongue movement.
